What does a Dermatologist do?

If you have a chronic condition, it may be more advantageous to seek the opinion of a medical provider specifically trained in that field. This is especially true when it comes to skin, the largest organ of your body which is why Dermatologists are a vital part of your care team.

In September of 2020, board-certified Dermatologist, Anita L. Henderson, MD opened Dr. G Dermatology as an extension of Dr. G Laser and Med Spa in Ellicott City, MD.

Dermatology services that Dr. Henderson provides include:

  • Treating teenage and adult acne
  • Managing eczema and psoriasis
  • Conducting skin cancer screenings
  • Performing skin biopsies
  • Surgical removal of non-cancerous skin lesions
  • Diagnosing and handling hair loss
  • Prescribing BLU-U light (photodynamic therapy or PDT). PDT is used to treat diagnosed precancerous lesion and is done in office.
  • Cosmetic consultations

 Chemical Peels for Skin Treatment

At Dr. G Dermatology, the chemical peel is used as a skin treatment. Scars, discolored skin, acne and wrinkles are all commonly treated with chemical peels on the face. They can be carried out independently or alongside other cosmetic operations. There are different potency levels of chemical peels which range from superficial to deep. Deeper chemical peels produce more dramatic effects, but they also require more time to heal.

A chemical solution is applied to skin, causing the top layers of the skin to shed revealing softer skin as well as improving appearance of discoloration. You might need multiple peels to achieve the desired results.

There are three kinds of chemical peels that you can opt for:

  1. Mild or superficial chemical peel: The skin’s outer layer is removed by a gentle (superficial) chemical peel. It is used to treat dryness, uneven skin tone, fine wrinkles, and acne. Every two to five weeks, you can receive a mild peel.
  2. Moderate chemical peel: Skin cells from the outer layer and medium layer are removed. Uneven skin tone, acne scars, and wrinkles are all treated with it.
  3. Deep chemical peel: Even more skin cells are removed during a deep chemical peel with a longer recovery time. For more severe wrinkles, scars, or precancerous growths, your doctor might suggest one.
